The car rocked back and forth as the train went over the tracks. It made me grab onto the seats as I made my way to the back of the car to see my friend Toris. This train was taking many of my acquaintances and me to a vacation spot by the beach. World meetings could be stressful, so Ludwig organized a little vacation for all of us to relax and have fun.
"Look how beautiful the ocean is, Elizaveta!" Toris called from the seat. I sat down next to him. The track was along the coast and it truly was beautiful. The slowly setting sun was making the water glisten.
"I can't wait for this break! We've been working our butts off at the meetings, huh?" I said.
"I know, but I don't understand why Gilbert is here. He doesn't even attend the meetings," he whispered.
"I heard he kept bugging Ludwig saying, 'West you've gotta let me go! You can't have fun without the awesome me!'" I whispered back. Gilbert was a couple of seats ahead of us talking to Roderich.
"Feliks told me different. He told me that Gilbert was begging because he wanted to spend the vacation with you."
"That can't be true at all. Gilbert is such an idiot!"
"You can never doubt Feliks's gossip facts. He's always accurate!" Toris said.
"Which car is Feliks on anyways?" I asked.
"He's on the third or fourth, I don't know."
"Well I'm glad you're on the first car with me. Or else I would've been stuck with Gilbert and Roderich!" we laughed. "Remember the good old days when we would beat up Gilbert!?" I said.
"He was so scary back then!" Toris stopped, "Hello, Roderich." I looked up and saw Roderich standing in the aisle next to our seat.
"Hey, Roderich," I said.
"Elizaveta, Toris. Mind if I join you?" he asked.
"Why of course!" Toris scooted closer towards the window and I scooted closer to him. Roderich sat next to me.
"You guys excited for our vacation?" Roderich asked.
"You bet I am! I can't wait to kick sand in Gilbert's face!" I said. This made Roderich wince and smile a little.
"Hey, Roddy!" Gilbert called. He stomped over to us and he blushed at the sight of me. "Hi, Elizaveta," he winked.
"Hello, Gilbert," I said without making eye contact. Now that I thought about what Toris told me, maybe Gilbert does like me. He has been bugging me a lot after the world meetings. Always trying to stalk me everywhere. Even after I whack him with my frying pan, he continues to bug me. I guess it's true, then.
"Roderich, the conductor said we should be arriving soon, let's go to the front to get the first glimpse!" Gilbert grabbed Roderich and pulled him away.
"Well see you later, Eliza," Roderich said. I waved bye. I looked out the window and saw the train was approaching a tunnel.
"See that tunnel? It's one of the oldest tunnels in the world!" Toris said.
"Sure looks old," the train entered the dark tunnel. The sound of the train echoed outside. I saw a light grow up ahead. I turned towards Toris, "So when we get there what are you going to do first?"
The light slightly flooded out window as the engine made its way out of the tunnel, "I was thinking about" the window shattered. Large dents were made on the walls. People were screaming. The ceiling collapsed. Toris managed to shove me under our seat. The sound of crushing metal filled my ears. The car began to tilt. I closed my eyes hoping this wasn't real. Yells, screams, and cries echoed though my head.
Damp grass. A pair of hands was shaking me awake. "Eliza!" the person screamed. After my vision cleared up I saw Roderich. He had a few cuts on his face. He helped me sit up and gave me a relieved hug. There was a line of people standing behind us. Most of them had cuts and tears. "Are you hurt anywhere?" he asked me. I shook my head.
I turned towards the train. Only the engine and half of the first car was out of the tunnel. The rest was completely engulfed by the mountain. "Wh-what happened?" I gasped.
A frown formed on Roderich's face, "The tunnel collapsed on the train. The rocks crushed the rest of the cars, and there's no way for everyone to escape. I managed to get you out of the wreck before further harm could be done. The only survivors are the engine workers and half of the people in the first car."
I quickly turned to the line of survivors: four engineers, Gilbert, Kiku, Tino, Berwald, and Antonio. Not that many countries. Wait
Toris was not standing amongst them. I quickly turned to Roderich, "Roderich, where's Toris?"
He didn't respond, and Gilbert started walking towards us, "Where is he?!" I screamed. I stood up and sprinted to the wreck. I ignored the pain in my knee and the call of my name. I dug my way into the first car. I searched through the bodies in there, trying to recognize one as Toris. Finally I found him, still under our seat. I pulled him out of the car. I tried shaking him awake. "Toris! Toris wake up!" he wouldn't respond. No. He couldn't be gone. "Toris! Toris please!" I sobbed.
I covered my tears by crying over his body. I heard two people running towards me. Gilbert got to me first and hugged me tightly. He pulled me away from Toris. My tears were stinging my cuts. "Elizaveta, we have to go," he said gently. I shook my head. I was too weak to fight against him. Gilbert carried me bridal style up the hill where everyone else was. Roderich followed behind us. Weakness. I was showing weakness. My emotions couldn't be held back, though. I wrapped my arms around Gilbert's neck and buried my face in his shoulder to hide my tears.
"Where's the nearest town?" he asked an engineer.
"Probably about ten miles away. I know the way, follow me," everyone walked slowly after him. The sky grew darker and darker. This was a terrifying nightmare. All of us should've been sitting around a fire pit sharing laughs on the sand, but instead I have this horrendous reality. We hardly made any progress, but we decided to rest for the night.
The engineers built a fire. We all sat around it silently. The screams of the dead passengers haunted my brain. The noise of the car coming down on us gave me an uncanny echo in my head. Roderich and Gilbert sat on either side of me. Seeing my discomfort, Roderich took off his coat and put it around my shoulders. Antonio sat hugging his legs with his head down mourning the loss of Lovino.
A good friend Toris was. A lump formed in my throat, and my vision started getting blurry. I couldn't hold them back, but they dripped one by one. Ludwig, Feliciano, Alfred, Arthur, Ivan, Yao, Francis, Lovino, all of them: gone.
Roderich put a comforting arm around me. He started to hum my favorite piano piece. I loved listening to him play that song. The tune made me calm down. It made all my terror disappear. I leaned on his shoulder and he gave me a gentle kiss on the head. The tears stopped. I started to sleep.
The bright rising sun woke me up. I found myself lying on Gilbert's chest and Roderich next to me holding my bitter cold hand. The both of them gave me comfort. The both of them gave me love. But only one of them I can return it to. Who?
